Perplexity

AI search that shows its web sources; the group's pick for research that needs links, plus the free Comet browser, Model Council on Max, and a nonprofit Enterprise price.

Perplexity, at perplexity.ai, answers questions by searching the web and showing the pages it used. The group reaches for it when an answer needs sources you can click, and uses Claude or ChatGPT when the job is writing.

Plans (checked October 2026)

From Perplexity's help center:

  • Free. Practically unlimited basic searches, a few Pro Searches, limited uploads.
  • Pro. Extended Pro Search, a choice of models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, image and limited video generation, more uploads. Perplexity's help pages do not state the price; members have paid about $20 a month. The current price shows in your account under Upgrade Plan.
  • Education Pro. $10/month for verified students and educators, and it includes Perplexity Computer.
  • Max. $200/month or $2,000/year. The most model access, the highest limits for Comet's browser agent, and early features.
  • Enterprise Pro. $40/seat/month, or $30/seat/month for eligible nonprofits and schools ($300/seat/year). Your searches are not used for training.

Comet, the AI browser

Comet is Perplexity's web browser with an assistant built in. It can summarize the page you are on, connect to Gmail, and carry out multi-step tasks on websites. It was first limited to Max subscribers and invitations (August 2025); by October 2025 members reported that anyone could get it. As of October 2026 Perplexity offers it for Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. The browser-agent tasks come with monthly limits that rise with your plan.

What members used it for:

  • Grant applications and other long web forms.
  • Summarizing a long WhatsApp group export into a list of use cases (November 2025).
  • Multi-page lookups, such as finding local businesses and drafting emails to them.

Newer features

  • Model Council (February 5, 2026). Sends one question to three models at once, then a fourth model merges their answers and shows where they agree and disagree. Max only, on the web.
  • Perplexity Computer. Perplexity's agent for longer tasks. Included on Education Pro; Max adds a memory feature for it in preview. One member mentioned it in April 2026; no one in the group has reported using it.
  • Spaces. Project folders with your own files. In September 2025 a member called Spaces the standout feature: several threads on the same files, and side-by-side model comparisons.

What the group uses it for

  • Checking a claim. When ChatGPT cites something dubious, paste it into Perplexity to see real web sources.
  • Donor and prospect background from public information. See Fundraising.
  • Research briefs. In June 2026 a member ran Perplexity Deep Research for a long, structured brief on bookkeeping agents, then exported it to Google Drive to share. See Bookkeeping Agents.
  • Inside agents. The GabAI agent offers a Perplexity research skill at install. A new user asking about its API cost in April 2026 was told to skip it, since the agent already searches the web.
  • A pairing that works. A June 2026 suggestion in the builders group: Perplexity for research and citations, Claude for writing it up.

What to watch out for

  • It still makes things up. Citations make errors easier to catch, not impossible. It "invents nuances" even with sources (August 2025).
  • No primary Chassidic texts. It searches the web, so it misses most seforim (November 2025). For Torah sources, use Gemini Notebook or Daiah.
  • Weaker writing than Claude or ChatGPT.
  • Stuck on "thinking." A member hit this in May 2026 and was pointed to Gemini instead.
  • Privacy. A member worried about weak privacy guarantees on the free promo accounts. Enterprise Pro is the plan that promises your data is not used for training.

Free-Pro promotions, past and present

In 2025 two offers spread through the group: a free year of Pro for Samsung Galaxy phone owners who installed Perplexity from the Galaxy Store, and a free year through PayPal, which ended December 31, 2025. As of October 2026 neither appears on Perplexity's partner-promotions page, which lists Airtel, Bouygues Telecom, Vivo and an American Express Business offer. Perplexity's referral programs ended in late 2025. Treat any "free Perplexity Pro" message as unverified until you see it on Perplexity's site.
