Canva

Canva (canva.com) is the online design editor most shluchim were using before AI arrived. In the AI workflow it is where a flat AI image becomes a design you can actually edit: change the date, fix a Hebrew word, move the logo, and export for print. It also connects to ChatGPT and Claude, so the AI can build the flyer in Canva directly.

What it costs

• Free for basic use.
• Canva Pro and the team plans are paid. Prices vary by country; check Canva's pricing page.
• Canva for Nonprofits gives an eligible registered nonprofit all of Canva Pro, plus team tools, free for one team of up to 50 members (Canva help). Canva reviews applications within about 72 hours. Make an AI flyer editable

This is the main reason the groups talk about Canva. You have a design you like, and one change (a date, a time, a spelling) would mean regenerating and losing what you liked. Three ways around it:

1. Magic Layers, inside Canva

Upload the flat image (JPEG or PNG) and run Magic Layers. It splits the picture into separate pieces you can select and move, and turns the text into live, editable text. Canva launched it as a public beta on 2026-03-11, first in the US, UK, Canada and Australia. Canva calls it a premium AI tool: each use counts against a monthly AI allowance that depends on your plan (Canva). It works on images from ChatGPT, Gemini or any other generator.

Member experience: the admin called it "exactly what we need" when it launched in March 2026. Since then the reports are mixed. It "works most of the time but not always recognizes all the details," picks the closest fonts it can find, and "sometimes messes up the text. Have to proofread it carefully" (October 2026). One member in May 2026 said it "usually ruins AI images" and preferred Grab Text (below).

2. From inside ChatGPT: @canva

Connect Canva to ChatGPT once (in ChatGPT's settings, under Plugins, per Canva's instructions). It works with any Canva account, including Free. After that, in any chat, type @canva and ask for what you want. Canva's help page confirms you can turn an image into an editable design this way.

The phrase members use (September 2026): @canva make it editable. The first time, it asks you to sign in to Canva; after that it stays connected. One shlucha found the text came out sharper but "changes a bit," so compare it with the original. In August 2026 another member's attempt was blocked ("conversion was blocked by the system before Canva could process it"), so if it fails, download the image and use Magic Layers instead.

ChatGPT tends to offer three Canva options, and in April 2026 a member found only the first one kept his exact words. Tell it plainly to keep the original wording.

3. From inside Claude

In Claude, go to Settings, then Connectors, and connect Canva (Canva's instructions). Then turn Canva on for the chat. In October 2026 the admin's advice was to skip the image step entirely: "Have AI come up with a design concept. Then have it create it inside of Canva rather than generate an image." In May 2026 one member found Claude plus Canva "not too good in my experience," so try it on a simple flyer first. Claude Design, Anthropic's own design tool, can also export straight to Canva.

Other Canva tools members use

• Grab Text. Turns text inside an image into editable text boxes. Select the image, then Edit, then Tools, then Grab Text (Canva help). It handles straight text best and does not support curved or rotated text. Useful for fixing a wrong date on an AI flyer.
• Magic Eraser. Removes an object from a photo. In August 2026 members found it the best way to clean up a group photo (removing backpacks), where ChatGPT and Gemini redrew people's faces.
• Canva Code. Builds small interactive pieces from a description. In July 2026 a member used it for a Jeopardy-style teaching game: paste the material, say how many teams and what the columns are.
• Background remover and upscaler, for making a logo transparent and sharp (May 2026).
• Exporting a Canva email design as HTML for Mailchimp (a member, July 2026).

Printing from Canva

• Download as PDF Print for anything going to a printer. Canva exports it at 300 dpi, with bleed and crop marks, and lets you choose RGB or CMYK. CMYK needs a paid plan (Canva help). PDF Standard is only 96 dpi.
• AI images are often too small for a banner. In September 2026 members suggested asking the image tool for 300 dpi at the exact print size, or rebuilding the flyer as a Canva design with @canva so the text prints crisp. Upscale the image if needed.
• For a very large banner, one member (March 2026) designed it at one-tenth the size with the same proportions and scaled it up, after running into Canva's size limit.

Affinity, Canva's free professional editor

Canva owns Affinity (affinity.studio), a full design, photo-editing and page-layout app. Affinity is free. Its AI tools (generative fill, background removal and similar) unlock when you have a Canva premium plan. In September 2026 the admin pointed members to it for jobs Canva handles badly: a member had complained that Canva cannot link text between boxes, lay out a two-page spread, set a drop cap, or resize text boxes vertically.

Canva's own AI

Canva has its own AI generator built in. Most members rate it poorly when used alone: "awful" and "cannot set up layout from what I ask" (November 2025), "pretty shvach with a basic prompt" and "very basic, slow, too many mistakes" (July 2026). A few found it fine for a last-minute flyer when another AI wrote the prompt first. The better uses of Canva are as the finishing editor, or as the target of the ChatGPT and Claude connectors.

Is Canva still needed?

Members are starting to ask. In September 2026 one member, after trying Claude Design, wondered "why people still use canva for anything," and another said Canva also lowers image resolution. Others still use it daily for templates, brand kits and quick edits. The short answer as of October 2026: if you already use Canva, keep it as the place where AI designs become editable and print-ready. If you are starting fresh and do mostly layout work, try Claude Design too.

What changed in 2026

• March: Magic Layers launched (public beta).
• April: members started using the Canva connector from ChatGPT and Claude.
• September and October: @canva make it editable became the standard tip; the admin recommended building flyers inside Canva through ChatGPT or Claude instead of generating images.
• September: Affinity (free, with Canva AI for paid plans) came up as the professional alternative; Claude Design as a competitor.
