Google AI Studio
Google's free developer playground for Gemini models, with a Build mode that turns a prompt into a working app; free to use, with daily limits that tightened in 2026.
Google AI Studio, at aistudio.google.com, is the free website Google gives developers to try its Gemini models and build with them. It looks rougher than the Gemini app and behaves differently, but it shows you more: which model you are on, how many tokens a job used, and settings the app hides.
In 2025 members used it as the free back door to Google's best model. That still partly works in 2026, with tighter limits.
What it costs
- Using AI Studio is free. Google's pricing page says AI Studio use is "free of charge in all available regions."
- Free models are limited. As of October 2026 the free tier includes Gemini 3.6 Flash. Gemini 4 Argon and Gemini 3.1 Pro are not on the free API tier (Gemini API pricing).
- Daily limits. In September 2026 Google added per-model daily limits in the AI Studio playground. Through October, users on Google's own forum, Google AI Pro subscribers included, reported hitting the Build mode limit after a few large prompts. Google says Pro and Ultra subscribers get higher AI Studio limits.
- The $300 credit is not for this. Members often mention a "$300 free credit." That is the Google Cloud free trial for new customers, good for 90 days, and Google's documentation says it "can't pay for Gemini API in AI Studio costs" (Google Cloud free program). A member wrote in March 2026 that the credit covered his Nano Banana use; check your own billing page before you count on it.
Build mode
Build mode turns a description into a working web app (or an Android app), with the code written by Google's Antigravity agent. You keep changing it by chatting, by marking up the screen, or by editing the code. When it works you can deploy it to Google Cloud Run, sync it to GitHub, or download a ZIP.
Two cost notes from Google's documentation: if you share an app, other people's use counts against your limits, and Cloud Run hosting can be billed separately.
In the group:
- November 2025: the group admin built a maaser calculator in "a few hours" and said building from scratch in AI Studio was "10X better and faster" than Claude at the time. That app's address no longer resolves.
- 2026: members kept recommending AI Studio for a quick visual first draft of an app, and Claude or Codex for anything that needs to keep working after the first week. See Vibe Coding and Coding Builders.
What shluchim use it for
- Trying a new Gemini model the day it ships. New models usually reach AI Studio first.
- Long documents. A member used its large context window for long ChabadOne troubleshooting sessions.
- Image tests with Nano Banana.
- Seeing token use before building something on the Gemini API.
What to watch out for
- It looks like the Gemini app but is a separate product with separate limits and history.
- Anything you build that calls a paid model can run up a bill once you add a payment method. Set a budget alert in Google Cloud.
