How do I get AI writing to sound like me and not like AI?

The answer

AI drafts a letter in seconds, but people can feel it. The fix is partly a good prompt and partly knowing the tells to strip out.

The tells that give it away:

Two habits fix most of it. First, give the model your voice: paste a few things you have actually written and tell it to match that style. Second, ask for a reading level. A request to rewrite at a sixth-grade reading level while keeping your voice and your main points reads warmer, and for a fundraising letter it historically gets a better response.

When the model is flattering you instead of helping, push back:

Honest feedback
Be direct and honest. Stress-test this hard.
If something is weak, say so plainly and explain why.
Use logic over sentiment and push until the argument is solid.

One more habit: for a pastoral note, let AI write the connective tissue, but you supply the specific memory or detail. That one true line is what makes it yours.
